The remains of Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman were returned on June 24, 2006 from Pakistan and received by the Bangladeshi prime minister with full military honours. He was given the highest Bangladeshi gallantry award: Bir Sreshtha. Pakistan agreed to return his remains as a goodwill gesture in April.
As, by chance, and not by choice, I am a Pakistani, so Rahman is not my hero. My hero is Rashid Minhas, who was awarded highest Pakistani gallantry award: Nishan-e-Haider. In the history of my country, Rahman is referred to as a traitor. I agree, Rahman was a traitor of Pakistan.
But I also totally agree with the decision of Pakistani government to hand over Rahman’s remains to Bangladesh, as a goodwill gesture. Many Pakistanis have criticised this decision of government. I failed to understand their viewpoint. Being Pakistani or Bangladeshi is a matter of pure chance. Had all these Pakistanis who are criticising our government’s decision been born in Bangladesh, their viewpoint about Rahman would have been totally opposite. So what is wrong if our government respected the emotions of our Bangladeshi brothers? Bangladesh is an Islamic country. We are at very good terms with it. We have a great love for our Bangladeshi brothers. So, if we decided to hand over the remains of their hero to them, in my opinion, there is nothing wrong in it.
