Pope's Negative Remarks about Islam

In his address to the scientists at the University of Regensberg, Germany, Pope Benedict XVI used offending language and gave very negative remarks about Islam and the last Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (PBUH). His attitude was incoherent with his stature. It has extremely hurt the feelings of Muslims all over the globe.

What the Pope said is one aspect of the issue. This aspect is condemnable. There is another aspect of the issue. Why traditional Ulema insist on wrong interpretations of Quran and Ahadith, and portray a negative image of Islam before Non-Muslims? Could not these Ulema stop telling wrong and erroneous things about Islam, which damages its name? Let us see some of the misconceptions of these Ulema, which are ruining the face of Islam. According to these Ulema:

  • An Islamic country can wage a war on a Non-Muslim country, without any reason, if the Non-Muslim country fails to accomplish one of the following:
    • converts to Islam; or
    • agrees to accept the sovereignty of the Islamic country and pays Jaziyah to it.
  • Prisoners of war may be converted to slaves, which will be distributed among the Muslim citizens.
  • Owners of the slave girls among these slaves may forcibly have sexual relationships with them, without their will and consent, whether they are previously married or not.
  • If a Muslim converts and becomes a Non-Muslim, he is liable to death penalty.

Similarly there are some historical events misreported or misunderstood. For example it is asserted that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) married Hazrat Ayesha (May God be pleased with her) when she was a child of six years and consummated this marriage when her age was nine. The assertion of Ulema on this notion is so strong as if it is a nus of Holy Quran. Strong historical evidence exists that the fact is quite different and this notion is caused by a misunderstanding of a report (Rawayat). But adherence of Ulema with it is surprising.
